Scholarships

The Clark-Pleasant Education Foundation presents scholarships to deserving students as part of our mission of supporting the continuing educational experiences for our students. Our scholarship programs:

Scholarships

Invest in future leaders

We help cultivate the next generation of leaders in various fields, such as science, technology, arts or public service.

Help overcome barriers

Our scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to pursue their educational goals, regardless of their financial background.

Create a legacy

Some of our scholarships honor the memory of a benefactor or founder by helping students achieve success, thereby creating a lasting positive impact on society.

WHAT TO KNOW

How to Start a Scholarship

Establish One In Your Name or Someone Else's

If Clark-Pleasant Education Foundation holds and invests your money, we typically apply the rule of 4. For a scholarship to live on in perpetuity, we invest the money in our endowment and only take 4 percent to fund the scholarship each year.

What does that mean? If you donate $25,000, that will produce a $1,000 scholarship each year.  This formula can be extrapolated to accommodate however much you want to give out each year. This option can utilize our scholarship selection committee or you may form a committee to decide the winner(s).

Take Over a Pathways to the Future Scholarship

If you would like to take over and name one of our established Pathways to the Future Scholarship — a four-year renewable scholarship that already has a set criteria, application and committee to pick the winner and a ceremony to present the winner — you can put your funds into that account and rename the scholarship.

To fully fund one of these scholarships is $100,000. A payment plan can be used to fund it over the course of a few years if that is of interest to you. This option would require a CPEF committee to pick the winner, but you are welcome to be on the scholarship committee.

Manage the Investment

The Clark-Pleasant Education Foundation partners with an experienced investment management firm to administer the finances.

Our friends at Koon Financial Planning & Consulting have a rich history in managing nonprofit endowments. Koon Financial and the board of CPEF monitor and guide the investment strategy to ensure it follows the detailed investment policy for the foundation.

The advisors at Koon Financial are Certified Financial Planners® and can also advise donors on tax-efficient giving strategies.

Determine Application Criteria

Each scholarship should have specific criteria for the student applying. If you choose to establish a scholarship, you would have to set the specific criteria for it. If you choose to take over a Pathways to the Future Scholarship, then the criteria are already set, but you can add in an item or two for preference to that named scholarship.

Select a Recipient

Each scholarship must have a committee to choose the recipient(s). We recommend a group of five or more. You can utilize the CPEF Scholarship Selection Committee or you can put together your own committee.

Set a Timeline

Most scholarships are open for students to apply at the beginning of the second semester of their senior year. Applications close around spring break in March. Committees will pick the winners and send to CPEF in April. Winners are announced at a ceremony at either the end of April or the beginning of May. Typically, a check is cut to the student’s school of choice in July.

Ask Us Questions

CPEF is happy to help you set up a scholarship. We appreciate your generosity and your support of CPCSC schools and students. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

About the Doub Familly

Many of the descendants of David Edwin Doub (1855-1933) and Mary Samantha (Boner) Doub    (1861-1933) have graduated from Whiteland High School and Whiteland Community High School, including all five of their sons.

The land farmed by David Doub and his family is where Clark-Pleasant Middle School and Ray Crowe Elementary School are now located. The site of Grassy Creek Elementary School was the neighboring homestead of Mary Doub’s parents, Henry and Penelope (Kinnick) Boner.

Since transportation was not provided to and from school at the time, it took a great deal of effort for the Doub boys to make the trip to and from high school and still complete their many chores at home. As part of her labor to feed her hard-working family, Mary was known for baking a pie for every meal, which comes to 21 pies per week. Besides his work ethic, David was known for being able to cut a pie into seven even pieces free-hand, a necessity when you have five boys!

Arnold (1888-1978), their oldest son, graduated from Franklin College and became a teacher and administrator in Michigan. He was the co-author of a nationally known high school mathematics textbook.
Virgil (1890-1967) was a lifelong farmer in Hendricks County.Harry (1894-1982) attended Purdue University, winning an award for livestock judging, then served in the U. S. Army in France in World War I.

Harry owned and operated three farms, two in Johnson County and one in Hamilton County, and was a long-time elder at Greenwood Christian Church. The farmstead where he and his family lived on Worthsville Road in Greenwood is listed on the National register of Historic Places.

Harley (1895-1963), who also graduated from Franklin College, spent his career as a chemist at Eli Lilly and Company. Frank (1897-1985) also served in the Army in World War I and became a successful businessman in Florida.

Harry’s children, D. James Doub (1924-2020) and Ruth Ann Doub Callon (1930-2015), and some of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren also graduated from Whiteland, as did some of Virgil’s descendants. Jim was a successful businessman and farmer in Johnson County, while Ruth is considered one of the pioneers of girls’ and women’s sports in Indiana from her exploits as an athlete and coach at Whiteland High School and Franklin College. Her accomplishments include enshrinement in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame and as the first woman in the Franklin College Athletic Hall of Fame. She also helped start the Special Olympics in Johnson County.

Besides Doub, surnames of some of the descendants of Virgil and Harry who are Whiteland alumni include Shrum, Callon, Osborne and Kelsay.

Attributes important to the members of the Doub family include faith, family, hard work, integrity and responsibility. Recipients of this scholarship are expected to have compiled a record of excelling in all those characteristics.
